Opening day for Avant Gardens is almost here! While we wait for our first share of delicious food, we wanted to let you learn more about the farms where your food is coming from. With this in mind, we will be doing a series of short interviews with each of our producers. Rick Babb of Babb Blueberry Farm in Beaufort will be supplying blueberries for Avant Gardens this season. Here is a peek at his farm in his own words: I have always enjoyed growing my own food and picking fresh fruit from other farms. When I moved to the country I decided to do things a little different. I wanted to grow healthy produce and fruits without all the chemicals. I thought it would be nice also to open up the farm and let others enjoy it as they picked their own berries. On our farm we produce all natural blueberries as our main crop. We have a small orchard of about 110 different fruit trees along with asparagus beds, garlic and shallots. We grow spinach from fall till early Spring and sell to local stores and CSA's We do not use pesticides or herbicides. Our fertilizers are either all organic or all natural. Most everything is done by hand. A typical day on our farm is busy, but good. Always lots to do but always time to enjoy God's creation and family. Our two biggest challenges are weeds and bugs. Both are very time consuming since we do not spray our veggies or fruit. We enjoy knowing we are producing good quality healthy food that you can pick and eat without the worries. When the grandkids are helping they can eat anything off the farm right as they pick it. Look for blueberries from Babb's in your shares this June! |
